Tom Clowes – Speaker, Storyteller and Adventurer

Tom helps organisations navigate uncertainty, make better decisions under pressure, and turn opportunities into measurable wins, with unforgettable stories from the world’s wildest places.

For over two decades, Tom has translated real, high-risk expeditions, on the land, sea and air, into actionable insights for teams: Getting lost on the way down from the top of the Matterhorn, running out of oxygen coming off the summit of Everest, rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, riding his Penny-Farthing across the Outer Hebrides, flying a powered paraglider into the Venezuelan jungle and even riding 100 miles along the South Downs Way on a unicycle. The point isn’t the drama, it’s what these expeditions taught him about judgement, risk, resilience and looking out for each other.

  • Say yes to opportunity – take some risks and replace fear of failure with a better mindset that will unlock growth. You cannot always control every situation, but you can always change your perspective or your attitude.
  • Break down big goals – concentrate on the small steps first. Be patient and consistent. Break down those big goals, to help them become a reality. Remember that you don’t have to be great to start but you do have to start to be great!
  • Light the fire within - surround yourself with people who believe in you and remember to believe in yourself. Communicate and be curious amongst your ‘tribe’. Lift each other up, be respectful and develop habits that keep people calm and kind.
  • Don’t lose your edge – stay sharp and get comfortable with uncertainty. Lean into discomfort. Develop ‘Cheerfulness in the Face of Adversity’. Develop a ‘Rhino Mentality’ and charge… Remember, you will lose your edge if you stay inside your ‘comfort zone’.
  • Stay focused – focus on the things you can control and don’t worry so much about what you can’t. When you are trying to do something hard you need to make strong decisions and have a clear head. Worry or fear can prevent this so keep a strong focus instead.

“Quite the most inspiring story I have heard in a long time—motivation, decision-making and teamwork at altitude. It hit just the right note for us at our annual conference in Las Vegas.”
