Paramotoring is a form of ultralight aviation where the pilot wears a small motor on his/her back and runs into the air with lift from a paraglider wing. Brothers Tom and Ben Clowes are currently planning an expedition for 2009 which will take them almost 650 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. They will carry the bare minimum of equipment on this 10 day long expedition, stopping to refuel and sleep in a style known as vol-bivouac, spending the night under their paragliders before taking off the next day.
The expedition will be filmed and photographed from the air as well as from the ground where they will have a support vehicle following them with spares and passing on weather information. Filming will start at the very beginning, following the planning through to practice flights through the wilds of Scotland and the Yorkshire Moors as well as the heightened emotion of the adventure itself which will no doubt be full of obstacles to overcome. Talks are currently underway with a major production company who want to make a documentary (three ½ hour programmes) about the adventure, which will be broadcast internationally.
Tom and Ben Clowes summitted Everest together in 2006 and have climbed together around the world. During this flight, Tom will be taking photographs and Ben, a professional cameraman, will be filming the journey. They are both accomplished speakers and regularly speak at companies as well as schools, about their previous expeditions.
